Protect Your Parents was created to provide information to families considering placing their loved ones in an assisted living or nursing home. Our mother was a healthy, active senior citizen prior to entering a nursing home for short term rehabilitation to regain strength after a minor fall. She had a history of UTI's which we reported to the nursing home staff upon admission. After a few days, our mother started exhibiting signs of a UTI which was reported several times with little to no action by the nursing home staff. The more we pressed for answers and action, the more the staff retaliated by unplugging her Echo Show (initially approved by the staff). The Echo Show was our mother's only means of communicating with us and gave her great comfort that we were checking on her. Next, the staff wanted to discharge her before she was medically ready. Our mother continued to decline while treatment was delayed for over two weeks with the staff misleading our family as to what actions they had taken to address the UTI. Shortly afterwards, our mother was rushed to the hospital in septic shock that caused a heart attack and damage to her lungs. She fought valiantly, for two weeks, to overcome the sepsis and begged everyone she met to help her because she was not ready to die. During this time while our mother fought for her life, the nursing home billed us to hold her bed for a potential return to the nursing home. The stress related to our mother's suffering caused her daughter to experience a minor stroke while her mother was in ICU begging to live. On February 1, 2024, our mother passed away due to complications from the sepsis. She remained alert and oriented until the moment she died.
Our family performed extensive research prior to placing our mother in that nursing home. All available facts indicated that the nursing home was a 4 out of 5 stars and very reputable. We learned that critical information is not always available to the public due to confidentiality agreements signed during lawsuits. We hope that by sharing our experiences that we can save another family from the loss of a loved one.
